Lake fishing/boating
Fishing season is year-round at Lahontan Reservoir. The reservoir is a warm-water fishery that supports white bass, walleye, white crappie, catfish, and brown and rainbow trout. Bank and boat fishing techniques are used to catch walleye, white bass, the hybrid wiper, catfish, trout and other game fish. A health advisory has been issued by the State of Nevada regarding consumption of fish caught in the reservoir due to mercury contamination from historic mining activities. |
Stream Fishing
From April to October, the waters of the Carson River offer some of the best trout fishing in the Sierra. The West Fork starts off fast and rolling from its headwaters near Lost Lakes but slows down and flattens out through Hope Valley. The variety of terrain along this river provides habitat suitable for Cutthroat, Brown, Brook and Rainbow Trout. The West Carson River is heavily stocked and is a favorite of fly fishermen, bait anglers and lure tossers. The average size fish is between twelve and fourteen inches. Larger fish (18" or greater) live amongst the deeper holes and can be caught by the experienced angler on occasion. The East Carson River is rated a blue-ribbon trout stream and provides some of best fishing for anglers of all levels. A "wild trout" stretch of river from Hangman's Bridge (on Hwy 89) to the Nevada border offers "catch and release" angling for the fly-fishing enthusiast, while the heavily stocked section above Hangman's Bridge provides "catch and keep" fishing for rainbows and an occasional Lahontan cutthroat or brown. Fishing below the Nevada border is not recommended due to historic mine leaching of harmful chemicals into the river. |

Sailplane Gliding
If you are looking for a truly unique flight experience, you will want to know the thrill and freedom of silent flight in a sailplane. Except for the occasional squawking of birds, there's no noise. In this peaceful environment, pilots know they are very close to experiencing what birds have enjoyed for millions of years. The Minden-Tahoe Airport, in Douglas County, is situated in an area world-renowned for its soaring conditions. The Sierra Nevada is known for inciting the lee wave where a very strong wind, under certain conditions, will cause an upward and downward oscillation of air downwind of the mountain range. World records are usually set in lee waves, which are sometimes marked by smooth, lens-shaped clouds called a "Lennie" (short for lenticular) by sailplane pilots. |

Horse Riding
Experience the Carson River the way it was done when the Pony Express rode through the area over a century ago. The Pine Nut Mountains offer low rolling hills with excellent footing for horses and magnificent views of the surrounding Carson River Watershed while riding through pinion pine, Utah juniper, and sagebrush habitat. Horse trails can also be found in the Virginia Mountain Range, which is the home of the famous Old Comstock Bonanza mining town of Virginia City. Another wonderful horse riding experience is in the higher elevations of the upper Carson River Watershed. You will enjoy some of the most beautiful scenery available. Local clubs and entrepreneurs offer rides in mountain, valley, and high-desert settings. |
Motorized Off-Road Travel
Discover the beauty of the desert off-road; experience the backcountry of the Carson River watershed, part of the Great Basin and Range province. Because of the amount of public land managed in Nevada, it is important to utilize the land respectfully and wisely for future generations. These lands include popular four-wheel recreational vehicle site Sand Mountain, a 600-foot high, two-mile long white sand dune outside of Fallon. There are also multiple Motocross Tracks in Nevada. |

Rockhounding
Rockhounding is a popular activity due to the interesting geology of defining the basin and range. There are many opportunities for rock hounding or gold prospecting amongst the many well-defined fault lines throughout the watershed. Remember, poking around old mines is extremely dangerous. Stay out of buildings and mine shafts. |

Golfing
Nevada is truly becoming a golfer’s paradise. An array of championship golf courses stretching from high desert slopes to valley floor wetlands create a world-class golfing experience with world-class views. Mild winters provide year-round golfing at Carson, Eagle, and Dayton Valley clubs. Depending on the time of year, you could ski and golf in the same day. |

River Rafting/Kayaking
Traversing a variety of ecosystems, the Carson River descends the eastern slope of the Sierras through granite canyons with pine forests and alpine meadows to emerge into the sagebrush covered foothills and desert canyons of Nevada. The East Fork of the Carson offers premium whitewater, used extensively by commercial and private rafters, May through July (water levels permitting). Whether you are an experienced rafter or first-time adventurer, nothing beats the heady rush of floating down the Carson River in a trusty rubber raft or kayak. You won’t want to miss this exciting ride! |

Mountain Biking
Bike paths and dirt roads abound within the Carson River watershed. For excellent and often challenging mountain biking, dirt roads access many of the region’s loveliest valleys. There are also many scenic and plenty of steep, rocky precipices in the mountains. Local bike shops are great resources for trail maps, guidebooks, accessories, repairs, rentals, and expert tips on where to ride depending on your ability and experience. Keep in mind that weather conditions can change rapidly. Be prepared with the proper clothing, sunscreen and lots of water. For safety, always wear a helmet. |

Snow Tubing and Sledding
If you are not one for skiing or riding, snow play areas, like the one at the junction of Hwy 50 and SR28, let you become familiar with the performance of tubes, plastic saucers, sleds, and toboggans. Snow tubing and sledding is great fun for people of all ages and abilities. Slowly you can raise your tolerance for the combination of snow and slope of higher elevations. You don’t need expensive equipment – just warm clothing, an inflated inner tube, and a nice, snow-covered slope. |

Showshoeing
Snowshoeing is a wonderful way to experience the upper watershed terrain and appeal to your sense of adventure in winter. Snowshoeing is easy to learn, and it lets you get outside in winter without the dependence of ski lifts. The legendary John A. "Snowshoe" Thompson is best known for the 90-mile trek he would make from Placerville, CA to Genoa, NV to deliver mail in the mid-1800s. Crossing the Sierra in midwinter he would cover the distance in only two days carrying upwards of 100 pounds of mail. |

Air Ballooning
The Carson Valley is a mountain valley which provides favorable atmospheric conditions for air ballooning. Multiple layers of air flow in different directions at different altitudes. This is important for air ballooning because they cannot be steered manually. Instead, balloonists must use these winds to their advantage when planning their trip. Riding in an air balloon is a pleasant experience as there is no sound other than the occasional burner sound. This allows the ballooner to enjoy the swoosh of the wind while looking down over the beautiful Carson Valley. Balloon Nevada offers air balloon tours over the Carson Valley. The annual Nevada Day Parade begins with a launch of hot air balloons. Air ballooning is also popular in neighboring Reno! Each year, the Great Reno Balloon race occurs in Reno with up to 100 balloons participating each year. |

Paddle Boarding
Paddle boarding is quickly gaining popularity around the world as a water sport. Instead of sitting inside a kayak, boarders either lie, kneel or stand on top of a board, shaped like a surf board. It can be wobbly at first but there is a quick learning curve and is relatively simple to use. It is a great way to have a fun workout, challenging your torso, back and arms as well as providing a great view of the environment. Lake Tahoe is a popular location for paddle boarding in the region with its clear, smooth water. In the Carson River Watershed, Lahontan Reservoir offers paddle boarding opportunities as well. |

Conserve Carson River Work Days
Conserve Carson River Work Days have become an institution in the local schools across the Carson River watershed because of the support from CWSD and NDEP. Conserve Carson River Work Days are not just about working to restore the river but working to conserve the heritage that surrounds the landscape. River Wranglers has established itself as the leading environmental education organization that covers the whole Carson River watershed because of how transformative the work days are for the students. High school students gain leadership skills and the opportunity to work with professionals from local conservation districts and government entities. Additionally, elementary school students gain mentorship and a better scientific understanding of the watershed through this experiential learning. |

Markleeville Creek Restoration Project
Alpine Watershed Group is partnering with Alpine County to conduct a stream and floodplain restoration project in downtown Markleeville. The site is a former U.S. Forest Service Guard Station and has a flood wall that was built in the 1930’s. A 1997 major flood in the area threatened the Public Utility District’s main sewer line. The goal of the restoration project is to restore the natural stream channel and floodplain form and function. |

Hope Valley Restoration Project
The long-awaited Hope Valley restoration project has been completed in the fall of 2017. The project aims to reduce erosion, reconnect the river to its floodplain, and enhance aquatic and wet meadow habitat for birds, fish and other wildlife. This project began decades ago as a grassroots project to restore Hope Valley to its former glory as a superb recreational site and ecological refuge. The valley was threatened by dam construction which would have flooded the valley, but Alpine Watershed Group and Friends of Hope Valley teamed up to prevent the dam construction, placing the valley in a public agency ownership. Willows have been planted for twenty years now to combat stream incision and promote a healthy river and floodplain. Approximately one mile of stream channel has been repaired through streambank stabilization. |

Newlands Project
In 1902, the U.S. Reclamation Service (now the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation) was formed to construct projects that would bring water to the arid West. The Newlands Project, named after U.S. Senator Francis G. Newlands from Nevada, who authored the Reclamation Act, was the first project built by the U.S. Reclamation Service. Construction of the Newlands Project began in 1903 and was completed in 1914. |
The Lahontan Dam is the largest structure in the Newlands Project. It is an earthen dam measuring about 120 feet high and 1,300 feet wide and forms the Lahontan Reservoir. The reservoir is 23 miles long, covers 100,000 acres, has 70 miles of shoreline, and holds 320,000 acre-feet of water. The Lahontan Reservoir is part of the Lahontan Recreation Area that is operated by the Nevada Division of State Parks. It is located 9 miles west of Fallon and includes beaches for swimming, picnic areas, campsites, and boat-launching facilities. The Newlands Irrigation Project provides water for farming in Churchill and Lyon Counties. Water from the Truckee River is diverted into the Truckee Canal at Derby Dam, and water from the Truckee Canal and the Carson River flow into Lahontan Reservoir. The water from the Newlands Project, now operated by the Truckee-Carson Irrigation District, is used to irrigate more than 60,000 agricultural acres. |

Dayton Carson River Projects
The Dayton Valley Conservation District has developed and approved a work plan to conduct channel maintenance, stream bank stabilization and restoration along multiple areas of the Carson River. The work plan contains channel clearing, snagging and maintenance to protect engineered structures. Vegetation will be removed from the streambank where it is encroaching on the river, narrowing the channel which can increase flow speed during floods. Removed vegetation can be used in other restoration areas. Other project in the work plan include cooperative weed management, floodplain rehabilitation, fuel reduction and conservation education. Please see the work plan listed below. |
